The Lake District has long inspired, writers, poets and artists. Its 16 sparkling lakes, jagged peaks and dramatic weather create landscapes that capture the imagination. Here we share a tea with Keith Melling one of England’s leading landscape painters. Born in 1946, he has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember and the Lake District has always been a source of inspiration.
“The mountains never seem far away and the green valleys leading to them always appear in proportion”
“As a painter of landscape I feel that I’m spoilt for choice in the Lake District, it’s such a dynamic and varied place, with inexhaustible subject matter. Every way you turn there is something worthy of attention. The mountains never seem far away and the green valleys leading to them always appear in proportion. Some of the lakes are long but certainly not too wide, so it’s possible to make a good composition almost out of anything and anywhere. This combined with the changing northern light, and the changing seasons make it the perfect place for a landscape painter.”
